Leaders In Training Program Application

This camp environment provides a unique opportunity for teens, ages 13 to 15, to build leadership skills, participate in community outreach, and assist counselors with younger campers. The YMCA’s LIT program operates hand-in-hand with our Youth Day Camps (same weekly themes, same hours, same meal plan, same field trips, etc.), providing our young leaders the opportunity to mentor younger kids, participate in daily activities, and help volunteer in our community at local organizations and non-profit programs.

As much as we want our LIT participants to grow as leaders, we still view them as campers and want them to utilize our gymnasium, studio, and other program areas to have a fun camper experience throughout the week.

LIT Responsibilities

Participants in the LIT program work under the same ground rules as all Y staff members and follow the guidelines below:

  • Provide meaningful assistance while they are in camp
  • Are well-groomed
  • Act in line with YMCA ethics, values, and standards
  • Use only appropriate language or gestures
  • Do not criticize the camp, campers, or staff openly, but share constructive criticism with staff and follow the proper chain of command
  • Always treat children well
  • Refrain from phone usage during camp hours unless during a designated time

While these expectations are in place, remember that LITs are 100% still campers. LITs will always have a Y staff member with them throughout the program day.

Registration in the LIT program is on an application basis only. Registration into the program will open for you upon acceptance into the program. Unfortunately, not all applicants are accepted; if you are not interested in the LIT program or do not make it into the LIT program this summer, you are welcome to register for our Youth Day Camp, which is for campers 5 to 15 years old. Prior experience in the LIT program does not guarantee a place in this summer’s program.
