7 Ways to Make Fitness Fit Your Lifestyle

Published 03.10.17

The passage of time is something we have no control over, but we can control how we manage our time. And, I don’t mean stepping in and out of a Tardis like Dr. Who, or relying on a Time-Turner like Hermione Granger did in the Harry Potter books. If you want to build fitness into your lifestyle to improve your health, you need to put yourself first. Here are seven great ways to do that:

  1. Start with an exercise that appeals to you

Choose what type of exercise you want to do, decide when to do it or what equipment you may need. Consider what obstacles may get in your way. Ask a YMCA wellness coach to help you make the right choice for you.

  1. How much time can you spare?

If you can’t manage to fit in an exercise class, a game of golf, or a 20-mile hike, be realistic and scale back your idea. Save the long workouts for the weekend or a time when you’re not working.

  1. Prepare to compromise

Time is precious so make the most of it and make your health a priority. Find small pockets of time and use them wisely. Talk to one of the YMCA trainers about exercises that have maximum impact in a short period of time.

  1. Move the obstacles one at a time

Take a break from the kids with the YMCA’s childcare service, or re-schedule those back-to-back meetings so you have short breaks at the office. With the right attitude, you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve, even if it’s just walking around your building or the parking lot to get your heart rate up.

  1. Build in accountability

If you’re not good at sticking to a plan, enlist the help of a friend or one of the health coaches at the Wilmington Family YMCA to keep you accountable.

  1. Make YOU a priority

In order to be a good husband, wife, partner, parent, employee, or employer, you need to be on top of your game. If you are in good health, you will be better at everything you do. Mark your “me time” on your calendar or set up an alert on your phone to remind you to exercise.

  1. Celebrate and share your successes

Use social media to tell your friends (or the world) about what you have achieved. Post your successes on Facebook or Twitter. If you are making drastic changes, take before and after pictures and post them on Instagram. Everyone wants to hear about success stories so share them with our community here at the YMCA.

We want you to make your health a priority and make the most of your time. If you need help to make fitness fit your lifestyle, the Wilmington Family YMCA has many programs, dozens of classes, excellent facilities, a nurturing community, and staff members who care.
