To help you get to know us a little better, we have decided to start an employee spotlight to highlight some of our team members:
Willie (Will) Holmes
What is your job at the Y?
I am a Zumba Gold instructor. I also sub for Zumba, Senior Combo, Seated Cardio Fit, Stretch and Strength and Deep-Water Aerobic classes.
How long have you worked at the Y?
I taught my first class at the Y December 31, 2018.
What is your Y story?
My Y story began in 2013. I was constantly in pain, requiring knee replacements. I was more than 100 pounds overweight and told the surgery couldn’t be performed until I lost at least 100 pounds. I did a lot of praying to God to help me to lose the weight that I could have the surgeries to stop the pain. I called around to all the fitness centers and gyms in the area checking on prices as well as location that public transportation Wave would transport me. Location and membership prices at the Y were almost perfect for my situation. I prayed about it some more about the same time my nephew who was a Y member at the time gave me a two-week pass. I came to the Y and talked to Dalia, Tom and Rob Y staff about my goals and needs. During the trial period the front desk staff told me about all the programs and services the Y provided. I also met some friendly people who were members at that time. Talking to the staff and the members I decided the Y was the place I wanted to be to work on my weight loss and fitness goals. So, I joined the Y in 2014, met my weight loss goal in 2016 and had my first knee surgery, had my second knee surgery in 2017 and have been at the Y since.
What do you like best about the YMCA?
The Y has some really great programs, fantastic staff members and a safe atmosphere. But the best thing by far are the people, the relationships you have with other members and staff.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
In my spare time I enjoy reading, volunteering at church and one of the local nursing homes and relaxing at home just doing whatever I enjoy at the time.
What is your job at the Y?
Assistant Aquatics Coordinator
How long have you been with the Y?
I have been working with the Y since Jan 2019. I started out working as a Membership Representative at the Welcome Desk. When I learned that the Y managed the City Pools, I quickly applied for the Outdoor Pool Manager position for the love of being outside. I then managed Robert Strange Pool as the Site Manager for the Summer of 2019. I then applied for the Assistant Aquatics Coordinator position. You could say I worked my way up the ladder!
What's your favorite thing about coming to our Y?
My favorite thing about the Y is the sense of community among its staff and members. I enjoy being among positive and hard working people. Whether it is the members or my staff, I enjoy watching them grow into amazing people.
What's your Y story? What initially brought you to the Y?
My Y story didn't start until I was hired in January 2019. Ever since I stepped into the Nir Family YMCA, I felt like I was at home. I fell in love with the atmosphere that the Y brings to the community. I can truly say that I wouldn't want to work anywhere else. Once I discovered that the Y cared about me and seeing me grow, I knew that I could care about the Y just as much.
What do you like to do in your free time (if you have any!)?
In my spare time, I am focusing on finishing my Master's Degree in hopes of graduating this winter. My favorite things to do in my time off are to read and write but most importantly, enjoying the sauna at the Nir Family YMCA.
