The YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina is pleased to announce their recent expansion into Ogden, NC. As of January 2, 2020, the YMCA is leasing the facility formerly known as The Edge and Wilmington Basketball Center, located at 7207 Ogden Business Lane. The newly named Ogden YMCA Activity Center will serve as a program center for child care, youth basketball, indoor soccer, pickleball and other YMCA programs.
The YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina has had a presence in the Ogden facility for years, offering afterschool care and Halo Hoops youth basketball programs, however, the Y plans to offer additional programs to the greater Ogden community now that they occupy the facility full time.
Joel Tomaselli, local businessman and current owner of the activity center approached the YMCA’s President & CEO Dick Jones late last year to explore the possibility of the YMCA utilizing the entire facility on a full time basis. Ogden continues to experience explosive growth, and Tomaselli saw this as an opportunity to expand YMCA programs to northern New Hanover County. The agreement officially went into effect January 2, 2020.
“We are grateful to Joel thinking of the Y, and by choosing us to partner with we are able to make both the facility and Y programs more available to the greater Ogden community,” says Dick Jones, President & CEO of the YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina.
Currently the Y is offering afterschool care, Halo Hoops Basketball, and indoor soccer at the Ogden YMCA Activity Center and the expectation is that more programs will be added, including summer camp, pickleball, and basketball over the next few months. The activity center is available to rent for special events.
The Y has already begun renovating the facility by refinishing the gymnasium floors and painting six new pickleball courts to revitalize the program center. In the coming weeks the facility will undergo more renovations to include new paint and signage to make it look and feel more like a YMCA facility.
“It started with a phone call from a parent whose child attended Murrayville Elementary School that wanted her child to be part of the YMCA Afterschool Program. We were able to figure out a way to get her child involved a few years ago, and today we have more than 50 families in our Afterschool Program from the Ogden area. Having this facility, and making it our own, is going to allow us to continue to grow our presence and serve even more families in Ogden with greater intentionality,” explains YMCA Youth Services Branch Director Corey Maarschalk.
