As part of the YMCA family it is important for you to be aware of current and upcoming renovations scheduled for the Nir Family YMCA on Market Street. With all new construction, facility updates are to be expected as we continue to find ways to improve and update different areas throughout our building.
In January, we began replacing the locker room floor tile in the Girls' and Boys' Locker Rooms. Those renovations are on schedule and we will be re-opening that area in the next few weeks. When the Girls’ and Boy’s re-open, Phase 2 will begin. The Family Locker Room will then close, making the showers and bathrooms inaccessible. The changing rooms in the Family Locker Room will still be accessible during this phase.
We will have signs posted for communication on the transition dates.
Phase 1 will be the Girls' and Boys' Locker Rooms.
During each phase we are changing the flooring in all walking areas to be gripped tile. This will reduce slippery areas and the need for mats. Additional drains will also be installed to avoid the occurrence of standing water.
Members will be directed to use a different locker room when their primary locker room is under construction. We will notify members in advance of each Phase.
Phase 1: Boys' and Girls' Locker Rooms - Ages 8-17
Boy's/Girl’s locker rooms will be closed. While these improvements are made, boys and girls will use the Family locker room.
Phase 2: Family Locker Rooms
Beginning Tuesday, February 18th, 2020
Family locker room showers will be closed while improvements are made. Families will be directed to use the Boy's/Girl's locker rooms during this phase. The Family locker room changing stalls in the carpeted area will be available during this time.
When this area closes, the locker room arrangements will be the following:
Phase 3: Men's & Women's Locker Rooms
Projected start at the end of March 2020
Women's/Men's locker rooms will be closed in the shower areas only. There will be no access to Steam/Sauna during this time. Women and Men will utilize the newly tiled Boy's or Girl's locker rooms while these improvements are made.
There will be clear communication posted on which locker room to use while each phase is taking place.
Q: What is the Y doing with the tiled floor?
A: We have been consulting with Thomas Construction Group, our contractor, BMH Architects, our architects and Daltile, the tile supplier to provide a better solution for our locker rooms walkways. We are changing the flooring in all walking areas to a smaller tile to provide greater traction. This will greatly reduce slippery areas and the need for mats. Additional drains will be installed to avoid the occurrence of standing water. On the Men's side, the steam room will also be re-tiled.
Q: When and for how long will the locker rooms be closed?
A: Each Phase should take approximately 3 to 4 weeks. Much of the concrete work and tile removal will occur during hours when the Y is closed. After each phase we will update members on a new timeline for the next locker room phase.
Q: In the Men's/Women's locker rooms, can we get to the rented lockers during construction?
A: Yes, you can. The construction areas will be blocked off with walls and signs which will allow you to still have access to the lockers. On the Men's side, there is a section of tile adjacent to the lockers that will need to be replaced and we will notify the men when that tile work happens as they will not have access to lockers during that time.
Q: Will women have access to the vanity area?
A: Yes, the only area blocked off will be the wet area that includes, showers, steam and sauna.
Q: When the Family locker room shower area closes, where do I take my children?
A: You will use the Girls' and Boys' locker rooms. The Family Locker Room changing stalls in the carpeted area will still be available during this time.
Example: Women and their children ages 7 and under will be able to use the Girl's (age 8-17) locker room for access to showers and the pool. Women may bring any children ages 7 and under to the Girl’s locker room with them.
Example: Men and their children ages 7 and under will be able to use the Boy's (age 8-17) locker room for access to showers and the pool. Men may bring any children ages 7 and under to the Boy’s locker room with them.
Q: If I am a woman (over the age of 18) and have a boy with me (under the age of 8), where do I go when the Family locker room shower area closes?
A: The Family locker room changing stalls will still be available for changing clothes. For pool access and shower usage, you will need to use the Girl's Locker Room during this phase. If the boy is above 8, he will use the Boy’s locker room to access the pool.
Q: If I am a man (over the age of 18) and have a girl with me (under the age of 8), where do I go when the Family locker room shower area closes?
A: The Family locker room changing stalls will still be available for changing clothes. For pool access and shower usage, you will need to use the Boy's Locker Room during this phase. If the girl is above 8, she will use the Girl’s locker room to access the Pool.
This fall we replaced the glass structure with new hardware on our racquetball/handball courts. Additionally the front walls have been smoothed down and we are currently in discussion for the next steps in the repair process. At this time, we are asking all of our Racquetball/Handball court players to provide feedback on the court’s playability. Please be sure to fill out a comment card at the Welcome Desk to share your feedback!
We repainted the 6-Lane Pool, pool deck and completed some necessary maintenance.
Permanent lighting has been installed in our parking lots to ensure safety after hours.
This fall we began the process of removing and clearing out damaged trees from Hurricane Florence in order to open additional space for soccer fields. We have also completed new landscaping and replaced the fencing.
