Aquatics, Day Camps, Outdoor Sports and Outdoor Exercise Resume

Welcome Back to our Pools, Day Camps, Outdoor Sports and Exercise!

Published 05.29.20 12:00 pm

On Wednesday, June 24 Gov. Roy Cooper announced that our state will maintain the current safer-at-home mandate for an additional three weeks. This means the earliest our facilities could open for indoor fitness is July 17.
As a partner in community health, the YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina continues to prepare to safely reopen, as determined by state and local mandates. Until then, we encourage you to take care of your spirit, mind, and body by joining us for outdoor or online exercise, swimming, and summer day camp options for children of working parents.
While we’re disappointed not to be resuming indoor fitness, that’s only part of what the Y means to the community. We’ve always been more than just a gym. You help us fill gaps and strengthen community in ways that no other organization can, and our work is needed now more than ever. Thank you for staying with us.

Face Masks Required

As of part of the Governor's recent executive order, members/guests/program participants ages 11 and above will be required to wear masks when using our facilities but not while exercising/swimming. Those ages 10 and under are not required to wear a mask.

Nir Family YMCA Pools

We're happy to announce the re-opening of our indoor pools at the Nir Family YMCA on Monday, June 1st. In following state orders, our pools will be open with a reduced capacity. In addition, we will be adhering to strict social distancing standards. During this time, access will be limited to YMCA members only. In order to serve the most members while at lowered capacity, we ask that you limit your daily time at the pool to 1 hour. We have added a reservation system for you to reserve a lane one hour prior to coming to the Y. Please arrive 15 minutes early as all members will be screened prior to entering.

At this time we are offering lap swimming, water jogging and water aerobics classes to active Y members.  During phase 2, locker rooms will not be open for changing/showering. Please come ready to swim. Prior to entering the water, you will be directed to rinse off using the cold water showers on deck. Please take a moment to learn more on what to expect when you return to the YMCA before doing so. Click here to view our pool hours and schedule beginning June 1st.

Online Reservation Required
Members will not be permitted access to our pools unless they have made an online reservation. You can make an online reservation on our website or mobile app. You can find video tutorials with step-by-step instructions on how to make an online reservation using the links above. If you need help with making an online reservation, please email Leslie.Douglas@ymcasenc.org for assistance.

Masters Swim
We've resumed our Masters Swim program while following the guidelines provided by our local health department. Swim sessions will be limited to 24 swimmers (4 swimmers per lane). Anyone interested in participating can register online. Click here to learn more.

City of Wilmington Pools

Y Members now have even MORE opportunities to swim at the City of Wilmington's outdoor pools. Robert Strange Pool recently opened to the public on Monday, June 22 and Legion Stadium Pool will open on Wednesday, July 1. Northside Pool is undergoing major renovations and will reopen soon.

This summer the YMCA will be providing family swim, lap swim, and deep water jogging times as well as deep water aerobics classes between the hours of 11:30am and 5:00pm Mondays through Fridays, and 1:00pm through 5:00pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is free to Y members, and $2/adult and $1/child for the community. Reservations are required to use the city pools and can be made between the day of swim. Click here for hours and other information.

Swim Lessons

We are excited to share that private and small group swim lessons will resume June 29th - all in compliance with state and local guidelines. We've implemented a number of new safety protocols to maintain social distance, and minimize contact with others. Both weekend and weekday classes are available. Click here to learn more about our new safety policies and register online.

Swim for Life and Float For Life

This summer we are offering a mini Swim for Life program Saturday mornings at Robert Strange Pool. Swim for Life is a FREE water safety and swim lessons program offered to the community to help prevent drownings in our area. The program is designed to teach children and adults about pool, beach and boat safety, as well as basic swimming skills. We will also be adding a new Float for Life water safety program for preschoolers ages 3 to 4. Due to new safety guidelines we require parents to be in the water with their child for this preschool swim program. Summer sessions will be offered at Robert Strange Pool on Saturday mornings from 9:00am-12:15pm on July 11, July 18, July 25 and August 1. Swim for Life is available for children and adults ages 5 and older. Click here to learn more or register online.

Group Exercise

Beginning Monday, June 1st we are kicking off a series of outdoor group exercise classes while continuing to provide virtual classes you can enjoy at home.

You can find available outdoor exercise classes on our schedules page. Class capacity is limited to up to 25 people at this time, including the instructor. Class size may vary based on available space and location.

Reservations for our outdoor classes are required and can be done through our mobile app or on our website through our schedules page. You can view a video tutorial on how to reserve a space using the links above.

Beginning June 1st we are reopening our indoor pools and offering outdoor group exercise classes to active Y members within the state of North Carolina only. At this point in time, reservations are required to swim or participate in group exercise classes. You can make a reservation on our website or mobile app one hour prior to start time. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to swim/class start to allow for check-in and safety screening. When you return to the Y, we require each family to sign a one-time waiver. Click here to sign our waiver online prior to coming for faster check-in. Read more on what to expect when you return to the YMCA. We look forward to seeing you soon!

If you have placed your account on hold and would like to reactivate your account to use our pools or participate in our virtual/outdoor group exercise classes, please fill out this online form to reactivate your account. If you have converted your membership into a donation and would like to reactivate your account please complete the online form above to do so. Thank you again for your donation.

Since the majority of our branches are unable to reopen at this time, we will continue to keep your account on hold at no charge if it has already placed it on hold. If you would like to put your account on hold, please fill out this online form by the 30th.

For those of you who have chosen to #staywithus and keep your membership active or convert your dues into a donation, we thank you for your support. Your membership dues enable our Y to help the community, support our employees and remain strong through these extraordinary circumstances.

Summer Camps

We are pleased to announce that we will offer Summer Day Camps, Soccer Camps, and Flag Football Camps beginning the week of June 15 through August 14.

As you can imagine, our programming will be adapted to operate in full compliance with local and state health department guidelines and to include social distancing practices. Spaces are limited and filling up quickly. Click here to register or learn more about our 2020 summer camp offerings.

Unfortunately, we have decided to cancel all 2020 summer camp programs held at YMCA Camp Kirkwood to ensure the safety of our campers, families and staff. Click here to read more.

Youth Sports

We are excited to share that we will be resuming a modified season of outdoor youth sports to follow the current recommendations and guidelines provided by our government, the CDC and local health officials. Our spring season of Youth Soccer, Itty Bitty Soccer and Flag Football will resume Monday, June 8th with team practices held weekly.

Because we've seen such a great response from parents and kids, we've decided to reopen registration for anyone else who'd like to join. Learn more or register online for Youth Soccer or Flag Football.
