Lifting Our Community One Play at a Time: Alex Highsmith Inspires at YMCA’s Annual Breakfast
The YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina proudly hosted its 11th Annual Breakfast for Community Event on Friday morning at the Nir Family YMCA, bringing together community leaders, supporters, and advocates to champion the Y’s mission of fostering youth development, promoting healthy living, and encouraging social responsibility.
This year's event featured Wilmington native and Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker, Alex Highsmith, as the keynote speaker. Highsmith reflected on his journey—from swimming at the Wilmington YMCA (now the Nir Family YMCA) as a child, to walking onto the football team at UNC Charlotte, and ultimately being drafted in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers—highlighting the power of perseverance, faith, and the importance of giving back to the community.
“Go make an impact on someone's life, daily,” Highsmith encouraged. “The YMCA instills powerful values—like commitment, humility, and selflessness—that stay with you for life. People may not remember what you do, but they will remember how you made them feel. The Y is shaping the next generation and shaping our future leaders.”
This event raised over $209,000 which provides scholarships for families and individuals to access program and membership opportunities at rates adjusted to their household incomes, ensuring that everyone has the chance to learn, grow, and thrive at the Y.
“Every dollar raised is a step toward a stronger, more connected community,” said Shannon Berg, Director of Development for the YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina. “When we invest in people—especially our youth—we’re investing in the future of our entire region. Today’s support will echo for generations to come.”
Because of the generous support from donors and grant funders, the Y is able to offer income-based rates for membership and programs to fit each individual’s or family’s financial situation. Join the cause and make a meaningful difference today. www.ymcasenc.org/ymcadonatenow.
