YMCA Turns Up the Beet: Nationally Recognized for Excellence in Summer Nutrition
The YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina is proud to announce that its Food Services team has been awarded the Silver “Turnip the Beet Award” from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for its outstanding work in providing nutritious summer meals to local youth through the 2024 Summer Food Service Program (SFSP).
This award recognizes SFSP sponsors nationwide who go above and beyond to deliver high-quality meals to the community. This year, just 91 organizations across the country earned the Silver distinction, making this a significant recognition of the YMCA’s dedication to fighting food insecurity and supporting children's health and development during the summer months.
“Summer is a critical time for many children in our community who rely on school meals during the academic year,” said Amy Hobbs, Senior Director of Food Services. “We’re honored to receive this award, but more importantly, we’re proud to have helped bridge the nutrition gap for hundreds of kids this past summer.”
The YMCA’s summer meal sites are part of a larger national effort to reduce summertime food insecurity by providing children with daily access to healthy meals. By offering free, nutritious meals through local outreach and partnerships, the YMCA helps ensure children return to school nourished and ready to learn.
This recognition reflects the YMCA’s commitment not only to community well-being but also to innovation in food services and nutrition education. Through thoughtful menu planning, fresh ingredients, and engaging programming, the YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina continues to make an impact—one meal at a time.
