QUICK ACTION BY YMCA COMMUNITY SAVES MEMBER’S LIFE
A medical emergency at the Midtown YMCA on December 16 resulted in a life being saved thanks to the fast, coordinated response of YMCA members and staff.
At approximately 1:00 p.m., Rich Lander, a YMCA member, collapsed in the gym shortly after finishing a pickleball game. Members seated nearby immediately recognized that something was wrong and rushed to assist.
Witnesses report that Mr. Lander became unresponsive and stopped breathing. Members initiated emergency procedures, including calling 911, beginning CPR, and retrieving the facility’s Automated External Defibrillator (AED). An AED shock was delivered, followed by continued chest compressions until Mr. Lander resumed breathing and began to regain responsiveness.
YMCA staff arrived quickly, supported the lifesaving efforts, and coordinated with emergency dispatchers until emergency medical services arrived and took over care. Mr. Lander was transported by EMS for further evaluation.
Mr. Lander has since recovered and is doing well. He has expressed gratitude to the members, staff, and first responders whose quick thinking and calm action saved his life.
“This situation shows exactly why training, preparedness, and access to lifesaving equipment matter,” said Jeremy Hardy, Executive Director-Midtown YMCA. “Because people knew what to do and acted immediately, a life was saved.”
The Midtown YMCA is equipped with AEDs throughout the facility and prioritizes safety training for staff and emergency response readiness.
