With a focus on safety, health, social growth and academic enhancement, the Y Afterschool program serves students in grades K-8 with a variety of programmatic and activity options to explore and develop their interests and talents. Each day, depending on the site and program, children are given the opportunity to partake in a variety of physical activities including sports, team building, swimming, outside play, group exercise classes, and more! Children are offered a healthy snack, and provided with a minimum of 30 minutes of structured homework help. Our YMCA Afterschool Program follows Healthy Eating and Physical Activity (HEPA) Standards and takes pride in promoting a healthier lifestyle by engaging children in their well being of spirit, mind and body.
The Y operates four Afterschool Care sites that serves New Hanover County Schools each day that school is in session. At the end of the school day, depending on the school, students either remain at their school for Afterschool Care under the care of Y staff or a Y bus transports them to their appropriate Afterschool location. Programs operate from the end of the school day until 6:00pm.
The Y serves students who attend school on a year round calendar all year long! Like our Traditional Elementary Afterschool Program, we will offer Afterschool Programming every day your child is in school. Additionally, during intercession breaks, children will have the opportunity to come to the Wilmington Family YMCA for a full day of activities where children will learn new sports and games, create arts and crafts, develop good sportsmanship, be a part of a team, build new friendships, swim and learn to be healthy!
For the 2018-2019 school year, the Y is holding an onsite Beforeschool and Afterschool Program at Coastal Preparatory Academy. With a focus on safety, health, social growth, physical education, and academic enhancement, the Y Afterschool Program serves students with a variety of programmatic and activity options to enhance your child’s confidence, enrich his or her social and physical development, explore and develop interests and talents, and encourage self-expression.On school days, the Beforeschool Program will begin at 6:45am and go until students are released to their classrooms. Programmatically, in the mornings, students will have the opportunity to be active with sports, exercise, and games, or have the option of a quieter morning with the opportunity to play board games, read, finish homework and participate in arts & crafts. Students must be dropped off by 7:15am or will need to wait in the drop off line for school.At the end of the each school day, enrolled Afterschool students will be released into the care of Y staff. On a daily basis, children are given the opportunity to partake in a variety of physical activities, including sports, team building, arts & crafts, exercise, and more. We offer a healthy snack, and provide a minimum of 30 minutes of structured homework help. The Y's Middle School Afterschool Care program, for students in grades 6-8, has a focus on fitness and athletic training. Students will have the opportunity to daily compete and grow in agility, strength, and overall healthy well-being. They will utilize the program areas available at both the Wilmington Family YMCA and Midtown YMCA locations. For our Wilmington Family YMCA location, they will travel to the Express Y twice a week to utilize the cardio and selectorized equipment and TRX room and will return to the Wilmington Family YMCA by 5:15 P.M. for pick-up. Our Midtown location will remain onsite at the Midtown Y and utilize the equipment at that location. Additionally, everyone will have the opportunity to work on homework and enjoy a healthy snack each day.
