We all need the advice of an expert sometimes, as well as the personal attention that comes with a trainer or coach. The Y offers personal training and coaching to help you set and meet your specific goals in order to live healthier. Choose from individualized, buddy or small group sessions.

Types of Training

One-On-One Training

One-on-one personal training involves one or more regular training sessions designed to help you achieve your fitness goals. Your certified personal trainer will work with you and your schedule to develop a personalized fitness program. Whether you are just beginning your fitness plan, need help refining your workouts or want to push your boundaries, personal training can be adapted to every fitness level. A well-balanced fitness plan is crucial to healthy and safe workouts. Our personal trainers can help you reach your goals in the most effective and beneficial way for your specific needs. Examples of custom training plans include:

Post-Physical Therapy Training
Have you been released from physical therapy and just need a little extra guidance? Our personal trainers can work with your injury and your physical therapist to create a plan to get you back on track. 
Mobility Training
Are you having challenges with range of motion during your regular workout or feeling imbalanced where one side of the body is stronger and/or more mobile than the other? Our personal trainers can assess your mobility challenges and prescribe a plan to get you where you want to be. 
Weight Lifting for Teens
Is your son or daughter involved in high school sports and they're using the weight room at school? Our personal trainers can work with your child to ensure they learn proper technique for a lifetime of health and wellness.
 
Buddy Training

Get fit with a friend, partner our spouse! Partner personal training involves one or more regular, partner training sessions designed to help you achieve your fitness goals. Your certified personal trainer will work with you and your schedules to develop a personalized fitness program. One of the best ways to stick to a fitness program is to have someone to hold you accountable and provide encouragement. Start your road to a healthier you with a friend, along with an expert.

Small Group Training

Group personal training is a great way to get the personalized attention you need while sharing in the fun and motivation of getting fit with your friends at an affordable price. Under the guidance of a certified personal trainer, you’ll take part in customized training sessions that are fun and challenging. Once you find a group that would like to work out together, pick a day and time and sign up at our Membership Desk. We will find a trainer for your group and you will be on your way to a new you!

Stroke Technique Training

Train with one of our swim technique coaches to improve your swimming techniques and skills. Stroke technique personal training will provide you with new training ideas and individualized workouts to further your knowledge and technique. This type of training is for all levels of swimmers whether they are competitive triathletes or individuals interested in improving their stroke efficiency.

BIO: 
My husband Brad and I have two children, Slade and Shayley. I love being his wife and their mom! I was born and raised in Wilmington. My passion is people! It is a privilege for me to part of a person's personal health journey. Helping people achieve their fitness goals, whether it be for health benefits or simply to be able to do their activities of daily living, is my personal goal as an instructor and trainer. I started working for the Y when the Express Y opened in August, 2015. I love the warm and welcoming atmosphere at the Y and I am proud to be part of this organization. In my personal training career, so far, I have primarily worked with the aging population to help with building strength, endurance, dealing with rheumatoid arthritis, De Quervain's contracture, and maintaining their ability to perform activities of daily living.  As a trainer and instructor, it is a privilege to work with anyone who needs encouragement and motivation to start, continue, or maintain their health and fitness goals.

Thanksgiving 1992 I hugged my grandmother and nearly broke her! Why? How? She had osteoporosis! That is when I started wanting to understand the body. My health and fitness journey started when I was seventeen. I fell in love with strength training and how resistance and pressure create strength. I started teaching group classes at nineteen and I have never stopped. I love laughing and having fun with my husband, Russ and my daughter Shea, they are my biggest fans! I enjoy helping people understand that their body is a special design that is created to move, recover, and adapt.

Bio:
Growing up I was an avid athlete, playing three sports year round until college when I decided to focus on swimming. After college, I decided to get my NASM certification and worked for two years at Retro Fitness in Delaware, where I taught boot camps and was a personal trainer. I moved to Wilmington in the summer of 2015 and started training at the Wilmington Athletic Club. While at the WAC, I developed a passion for Spinning and decided to get certified in that as well. I am now very proud to be one of the swim coaches here for Cape Fear Aquatic Club. My background entails exercise for all ages, with a focus on body weight exercises and resistance training. I love to show how creative you can be in the gym! I love traveling and any kind of adventure, but you can usually find me outside in the sun, especially at the beach!

I enjoying trying new sports and physical activities.  Fortunately for me, I like when I am not good a movement or sport and can see improvement and progress.  I have had many opportunities to get better at things.  Fortunately for you, I have been on the receiving end of phenomenal trainers and some apathetic, ineffectual trainers.  I know what it feels like to be looking for guidance in this arena. My efforts are successful when a client notices improvement in their everyday life and can trace it back to the time spent with me in the gym.
