Swim Strokes

Skills to Support a Healthy Lifestyle

Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being, and foster a lifetime of physical activity from our YMCA V6 curriculum.

Classes must have a minimum of three participants in order to hold the class. If there are less than three participants, swim instructors reserve the right to combine classes with similar goals and abilities or cancel the class.
 
 

Stage 4  |  Stroke Introduction

Preschool 3-5 years, Youth 5-12 years, Teen & Adult 13+ years

In Stage 4, students develop stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and learn the breaststroke, kick and butterfly kick. Water safety is reinforced through treading water and elementary backstroke.

*Preschool Stage 4 only available at Nir Family YMCA 

Instructor to Student Ratio

1:4 for preschool and 1:6 for youth and adults

Qualifications
  • Able to submerge & retrieve an object in chest deep water
  • Able to swim front crawl 15 yards while taking a breath
  • Able to swim-float-swim 15 yards
  • Able to jump in & tread water for 30 seconds
  • Able to swim to wall & exit

Stage 5  |  Stroke Development

Youth 5-12 years, Teen & Adult 13+ years

In Stage 5, students work on more advanced stroke development and better technique for all four competitive strokes. The emphasis on water safety continues through treading water and sidestroke.

Instructor to Student Ratio

1:6 for youth and adults

Qualifications
  • Able to swim freestyle and backstroke for 25 yards.
  • Able to swim breaststroke and dolphin kick for 15 yards
  • Able to tread water using multiple kicks for 1 minute

Stage 6  |  Stroke Mechanics

Youth 5-12 years, Teen & Adult 13+ years

In Stage 6, students continue to build on their stroke development and build swimming endurance.  This is a GREAT placement for those competitive swimmers looking to get faster and stronger! They also discover how to incorporate swimming into a healthy lifestyle. 

Instructor to Student Ratio

1:6 for youth and adults

Qualifications
  • Able to swim freestyle with rotary breathing & backstroke for 25+ yards
  • Able to swim butterfly with over arm recovery for 25 yards
  • Able to swim breaststroke with proper stroke rhythm for 25+ yards
  • Able to dive from kneeling position

Y Member: $75 / 8-classes
Y Member: $40 / 4-classes
 
Non-Member: $105 / 8-classes
Non-Member: $60 / 4-classes
