YMCA Camp Kirkwood

Camp History

Founding of Camp Kirkwood

Camp Kirkwood was originally built in 1958 by the Old Wilmington Presbytery and Presbytery of Coastal Carolinas Churches with the intention of offering outdoor camping opportunities to people of all ages. The camp is located just outside of Wilmington, NC on 195 acres of pristine woodlands and features a 10-acre lake.

Friends of Camp Kirkwood and the YMCA

In December of 2009, the YMCA of Southeastern NC (formerly known as the Wilmington Family YMCA) formed a partnership with the Friends of Camp Kirkwood to take over the camp's operation in an effort to revitalize its mission of serving youth. The result of this partnership is that the YMCA and Friends of Camp Kirkwood have been successful in raising funds to expand camp offerings by adding elements including: Swing by Choice, low ropes course, high ropes course & zip line, Lake Race Rafts, a prayer labyrinth, power pole and paddle boards.

Today, what is now known as YMCA Camp Kirkwood hosts more than 400 day campers and 500 overnight campers each year.
