We offer multiple babysitting courses throughout the year at the Nir Family YMCA.

Leadership Through Play

Ages: 12-15

The Leadership through Play program is designed to equip young teens with essential life skills, foster positive relationships, and provide hands-on experience working with children. This program is an excellent opportunity for teens to build confidence in childcare, strengthen teamwork abilities, and enhance communication skills, all while making a positive impact on the community.
 

Commitment: 4 hours of service each month

Qualifications: All applicants must submit an application and possess a Safe Sitter certification, or another recognized babysitting certification. A reference letter is also required for consideration.

Exclusive Benefits:

  • Guaranteed Interview for Child Watch Associate Position: At age 15, program participants are guaranteed an interview for a Child Watch Associate position, providing a seamless transition to paid employment.

Babysitter Training Course

Grades: 6-8

Participants will earn their American Red Cross Pediatric CPR, First Aid, and Safe Sitter® certifications. They will also leave with a Safe Sitter® handbook and babysitter kit, which includes a coloring book, sunscreen, CPR mask, and more!

Upcoming Courses

Safe Sitter® prepares students in grades 6-8 to be safe when they’re home alone, watching younger siblings, or babysitting. Students learn life-saving skills, such as how to rescue someone who’s choking and helpful information like what to do if there’s severe weather. The lessons are filled with fun activities and role-playing exercises. Students even get to use CPR manikins to practice choking rescue and CPR!

Some of the skills students will learn include:

  • Safety Skills: Students learn how to prevent unsafe situations and what to do when faced with dangers such as power failures or weather emergencies.
  • Child Care Skills: Students learn tips to manage behavior that will help them stay in control of themselves and the children in their care. Students also learn the ages and stages of child development, as well as practice diapering.
  • First Aid & Rescue Skills: Learning skills such as choking rescue and CPR is often students’ favorite part of the class. Students also learn a system to help them assess and respond to injuries and illnesses. 
  • Life & Business Skills: The ability to screen jobs, discuss fees, and greet employers will set students up for success now and in the future. Students practice these skills through various role play.

Safe@Home Course

Grades: 4-6 

Safe@home is a 90-minute program that prepares students to care for themselves when parents are away for short periods of time. Students learn how to practice safe habits, how to prevent unsafe situations, and what to do when faced with dangers, such as power failures or weather emergencies. Students are also introduced to the Safe Sitter® First Aid Chart and learn a system to help them assess and respond to injuries and illnesses. The program is designed to prepare students for their first steps towards independence.

Grandparent Bootcamp - Now Registering!

 

Many things have changed since the participants grandparents raised their children. It is important for grandparents to learn the new recommendations for care based on research from doctors and scientists studying the physical and emotional development of infants and children.

Taught by certified Safe Sitter® Instructors, participants will learn how to provide the best and safest care for their grandchildren. They will also learn the latest information on how to safely care for infants and children and how to manage the behavior of children of all ages, in addition to life-saving skills such as choking rescue, first aid, and injury management.

Learning tips on creating a good relationship from the start as well as learning to respond to too many requests to babysit will help grandparents enhance their relationship with their children and create lasting memories with their grandchildren.
