YMCA of Southeastern NC Celebrates Community Impact at 2026 Chairman’s Social

March 27, 2026

The YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina welcomed community leaders, donors, volunteers, and partners to its 2026 Chairman’s Social, an evening dedicated to celebrating the collective impact that makes the YMCA’s mission possible across our region.

Held annually, the Chairman’s Social provides an opportunity to reflect on the lives changed through YMCA programs and partnerships, while also looking ahead to opportunities that will allow the Y to continue serving families and individuals for generations to come.

Throughout the evening, speakers highlighted the growing role the YMCA plays in strengthening youth development, promoting healthy living, and fostering social connection across southeastern North Carolina.

Strengthening Community Through Access and Opportunity

Board Chair Jennifer Devers shared how many individuals first come to the YMCA for a program or service, but remain because of the relationships, support, and sense of belonging they find along the way.

Through donor support, partnerships, and community collaboration, the YMCA continues working to ensure that programs and services remain accessible to all, regardless of financial circumstance.

Recent impact includes:

  • More than $1.5 million provided in membership and program support through donor gifts, grants, sponsors, and partners
  • Over 1,200 families receiving financial assistance to access YMCA programs and services
  • 507 children gaining lifesaving swim skills through water safety programs
  • 573 cancer survivors served through LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA over the past 15 years
  • 1 in 5 children participating in summer camp with the support of financial assistance

These outcomes represent more than numbers — they reflect individuals gaining confidence, families building connections, and community members improving their health and well-being through YMCA programs.

Growing to Meet Community Needs

YMCA President & CEO Dick Jones shared updates on the organization’s continued growth across southeastern North Carolina, including expanding childcare programs now serving more than 1,600 children daily, strong participation in summer camps and youth programs, and increasing demand for swim lessons and wellness initiatives.

As the community continues to grow, the YMCA is working to expand programs and enhance facilities to meet evolving needs. A key initiative currently underway is the expansion of the Midtown YMCA, which will significantly increase access to afterschool programs, aquatics, wellness opportunities, and gathering spaces for individuals and families of all ages.

Additional investments in YMCA Camp Kirkwood and other program locations will help ensure that the YMCA continues providing welcoming, high-quality environments where individuals can learn, grow, and thrive.

Recognizing Leaders in Community Impact

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the YMCA’s annual Impact Awards, which recognize individuals and organizations whose generosity, leadership, and service strengthen the YMCA and the broader community.

Impact Award for Volunteerism: Sally Meserole

Sally Meserole’s connection to the YMCA spans more than 30 years, and her impact has been felt across countless programs, events, and initiatives. Her commitment is rooted in a true passion for helping others and strengthening our community.

Beyond her volunteer work, Sally spent 33 years as a physical education and health teacher, inspiring generations of young people to stay active and build lifelong healthy habits. Today, she continues to support the Y through her role on our Resource Development Team, always finding new ways to champion our mission.

Sally’s dedication, energy, and generosity have made a lasting difference in the lives of so many. The YMCA is proud to recognize her as this year’s Impact Award for Volunteerism recipient.

Impact Award for Sponsorship: Novant Health

Novant Health exemplifies what it means to be a true partner in community well-being. Their commitment goes beyond financial support — they actively engage, collaborate, and invest in initiatives that make health and wellness more accessible for all.

From providing health screenings and resources at community events to supporting youth programs like soccer leagues, local races, and Healthy Kids Day, their impact is felt across all ages.

A standout example of this partnership is Novant’s on-site physical therapy services at the Nir Family YMCA, meeting individuals where they are and helping them recover and grow stronger in a supportive environment. The YMCA is also grateful for Novant Health team members who serve in volunteer leadership roles and help strengthen the organization’s mission through their involvement and advocacy.

Novant Health’s partnership demonstrates the power of collaboration in building a healthier, stronger community.

Impact Award for Partnership: Friends of Camp Kirkwood

For nearly 70 years, Camp Kirkwood has been a place where lives are shaped — where young people build confidence, form lasting friendships, and develop leadership skills in a supportive environment.

When the future of the camp was once uncertain, the Friends of Camp Kirkwood stepped forward with vision and determination to ensure its legacy would continue.

Because of their unwavering support, Camp Kirkwood was not only preserved but strengthened. Their commitment has helped enhance programs, improve facilities, and create meaningful experiences for generations of campers.

The Friends of Camp Kirkwood have protected more than a place — they have upheld a purpose, ensuring that this special environment continues to impact young people for years to come.

Impact Award for Charitable Support: James E. Moore, Jr.

Jim Moore’s connection to the YMCA spans more than 47 years, and his impact has been felt in countless ways — as a member, volunteer, board leader, and dedicated advocate for the YMCA’s mission.

He has served multiple terms on the YMCA Board of Directors, including as Board Chair, and has played an instrumental role in capital and annual campaigns that have helped shape the organization’s growth and ability to serve the community.
